At FDK, we do more than teach self defense! The Flying Dragon system was specifically designed for children to promote physical fitness, flexibility, coordination, balance, self discipline, and self esteem, while providing a fun way to learn self defense.
Physical Fitness: Being fit is something everyone can and should strive for. Our program incorporates regular exercise to promote muscular development and cardiovascular conditioning.
Flexibility: Flexibility through stretching is one of the most important aspects of our program. Every class contains 5-10 minutes of stretching. Stretching makes muscle elongate and relax, which greatly reduces ones chance of injury. It also makes the high kicks that are the hallmark of martial arts possible.
Coordination & Balance: Coordination and balance are very important for children to learn, especially at a young age. These are skills that carry over into many aspects of life outside of karate. Children in our program participate in a variety of drills, exercises, and games specifically designed to increase hand-eye coordination and their sense of balance.
Discipline & Self Esteem: Through a system of reinforcement based on achievement, we hope to raise our students levels of self esteem and discipline. Students are taught the virtues of discipline, respect, and honor from the 1st class. Students are rewarded for their accomplishments in class, such as when they receive stripes on their belts, or patches for breaking boards. We also aspire to teach leadership ability through ranking. Higher ranked students are expected to set an example for newer students by providing examples of proper discipline and respect as well as helping them learn new skills. This promotes mature thinking and a strong character in our students.
